March: The Graphic Novel
Congressman John Lewis (GA-5) is an American icon, one of the key figures of the civil rights movement. His commitment to justice and nonviolence has taken him from an Alabama sharecropper’s farm to the halls of Congress, from a segregated schoolroom to the 1963 March on Washington, and from receiving beatings from state troopers to receiving the Medal of Freedom from the first African American president. Now, remembering how a 1950s comic book helped spread the philosophy and tools of nonviolent resistance among his generation of activists, Congressman Lewis has a new project to do the same for today’s youth. Together with co-writer Andrew Aydin and artist Nate Powell (Swallow Me Whole, The Silence of Our Friends, The Heroes of Olympus), he brings his incredible story to comics, in the graphic novel trilogy March. As we approach the 50th anniversary of the day Martin Luther King, Jr. said “I Have a Dream,” meet the last living person who spoke from that podium, and see his incredible story come to life in a gorgeous graphic novel from Top Shelf Productions.

Comic Book Law School 303: More!
On Thursday, you learned the basics, and on Friday you gained a better understanding of contracts, licenses, and agreements. It’s now time to learn about some of the more complex issues facing creators, publishers, and other business owners. Noted attorney Michael Lovitz, author of the classic The Trademark and Copyright Book comic book, returns to address some of the more advanced (and often confusing) issues facing the creative and business communities, particularly in light of the ever-expanding worlds of new media, self-publishing and social networking. And this time, he’s not alone, as attorneys David Branfman and David Lizerbram and Professor Marc Greenberg join Michael to share their collective knowledge and insights in some of the more cutting-edge legal issues faced by creators and businesses and discuss important recent legal decisions. Still interactive and four times as informative, the panel will touch on as many of the topics as time allows, including recent rulings in comic book creator and publisher litigations; the interplay of copyright terminations and work-for-hire agreements; blogs, podcasts, tweets, and cybersquatters; knockoffs, tarnishment, and dilution; satires, parodies and fair use; and the legalities of fan art and fan fiction. Plus: practical advice on how recent legal decisions and pending cases are likely to affect the field of popular culture and the role they may play in your creative and business plans. Please note: The Comic Book Law School seminars are designed to provide relevant information and practice tips to practicing attorneys, as well as practical tips to creators and other professionals who may wish to attend. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Preview Their Upcoming Lineups
Legendary Pictures: Godzilla — An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence. Gareth Edwards directs Godzilla, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, and Juliette Binoche, with David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston. The screenplay is by Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont, and Dave Callaham. Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing with Mary Parent and Brian Rogers. Alex Garcia and Patricia Whitcher are the executive producers, alongside Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira. The film is from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures.
Legendary Pictures: Seventh Son — The fantasy action adventure Seventh Son takes audiences to a time long past, where evil is about to be unleashed. Jeff Bridges stars as Master Gregory, a Falcon Knight who imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) years ago. Now escaped, she seeks vengeance, and Gregory has only until the next blood moon to train a new apprentice (Ben Barnes), the seventh son of a seventh son, to fight a dark magic unlike any other. Oscar nominee Sergei Bodrov directs an international cast that includes Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Olivia Williams, Antje Traue, and Djimon Hounsou. The film is from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures.
Warner Bros. Pictures: 300: Rise of an Empire — From producer Zack Snyder, Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures present a new chapter in this epic saga, based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel Xerxes and told in the same breathtaking visual style as the blockbuster 300. Directed by Noam Murro, 300: Rise of an Empire takes the action to a fresh battlefield-on the sea-with a cast of both new and returning stars, led by Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey, Hans Matheson, David Wenham, and Rodrigo Santoro. Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, and Bernie Goldmann produce, with Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad again collaborating on the screenplay.
Warner Bros. Pictures: Gravity — From director Alfonso Cuarón comes the sci-fi Thriller Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, alongside veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney). On a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes, leaving them completely alone-tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further into the terrifying expanse of space.
Warner Bros. Pictures: The LEGO Movie — From directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller of 21 Jump Street comes the first ever full-length theatrical LEGO adventure, The LEGO Movie, about a perfectly average LEGO minifigure named Emmet who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which he is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared. The original 3D computer animated story stars Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, and Alison Brie, with Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman.

A Feast for Your Eyes: Creativity in Comics and Cuisine
Cooking is creativity. Food is art. In so many ways, the connections between food and comics on a creative level are everywhere. A chef’s knife is the equivalent of an artist’s pencil or brush. Their kitchens are their canvases. Both chefs and artists are only limited by their own imaginations; they both use their tools to take what is in their minds and create masterpieces in different mediums. But the processes are the same, and that’s what panelists will be exploring in this open discussion, with C. B. Cebulski, Brian Malarkey, Rosanna Pansino, and Justin Warner.

Comics Arts Conference Session #11: The Poster Session
The CAC’s poster session gives attendees the opportunity to interact directly with presenters.
Comic-Con Group — In collaboration with the founders of San Diego Comic- Con, the San Diego State University Library’s Comic Arts Committee is helping preserve and promote San Diego’s rich comics, science fiction, and popular arts culture. Markel D. Tumlin, Anna Culbertson, Pamela Jackson, Michael Lapins, and Wil Weston (San Diego State University) will present on the committee’s current projects and activities and SDSU’s commitment to collecting and preserving the cultural heritage of Comic-Con, highlighting the Comic-Con Kids grant project and the recent acquisition of Comic-Con co-founder Richard Alf’s personal papers. Revolutionary Comics Group Jacob Holt (Henderson State University) examines X-Men’s Magneto as a Darwinist and a Civil Rights leader. Mark A. Havstad (Havstad Water and Energy Company) identifies the key traits lacking in extant heroes and heroines that make them scientifically and globally incapable of dealing with challenges like global climate change, religious and fundamentalist worldviews, and widespread poverty. Teaching with Comics Group Nicole Rehnberg (California State University, Fullerton) argues that fairy tale comics can assist students in learning how narratives work by decoding new retellings of familiar stories. Barbara Glaeser (California State University, Fullerton) offers several strategies for using comics to engage reluctant readers and writers and low-achieving students that can be used both in the classroom and at home. Michael Kersulov (Indiana University) discusses his findings on how autobiographical graphic novels and other pictorial memoirs can be and have been used in secondary schools as a way to promote traditional and visual literacy. Postmodern Comics Group Kyle Eveleth (University of Kentucky) examines the ways in which the structural elements of Watchmen’s narrative both strengthen and subvert its content to upset “normal” (mimetic) conceptions of time. Paul Cheng (University of California, Riverside) focuses on how Chris Ware’s work manipulates the formal techniques of comics to create a “meta-comic” that both celebrates and satirizes the medium, in addition to his often-devastating critiques of social life. Joyce C. Havstad (University of California, San Diego) compares panels from Asterios Polyp with pages from several iconic works of postmodernist literature, showing how Mazzucchelli employs techniques more commonly associated with written novels while adapting these techniques to suit the medium of graphic novels, with implications for both media at large. Comics off the Page Group Lesley Farmer (California State University Long Beach) explores how to teach preservice librarians and education technologists the concepts of information architecture through the use of comic arts. Mara Wood and Allen Thomas (University of Central Arkansas) present the results of their study on how well readers’ abilities to connect to and become part of the stories they read are predicted by their frequency of comic book reading. Eric Bruce (Western Oregon University) applies Dynamic Systems Theory, which proposes that decision making is shaped by the interaction of individual, task, and environment, to the world of Batman, considering how the unique characteristics of Batman’s character and environment shape his plan of action.
Comics and Transformation Group — Julie Humphrey (University of California, Santa Barbara) critiques how geek fashion has become a marker of sex appeal and intelligence through popular culture and gender studies. Benjamin J. Villarreal (Columbia University) examines Lee Bermejo’s Batman: Noel as a retelling of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, asking if Bermejo’s adaptation qualifies as part of a lost 19th-century literary genre because of its source material.
Comics and Psychology Group — Brian Lott (Henderson State University) looks into the psychological aspects of the Black Widow, asking what cognitive processes are involved in her behavior and how well these fictional representations reflect real-life manifestations. Benjamin Graves (Henderson State University) uses Alfred Adler’s theories of individual psychology to examine the links between Ant-Man’s size manipulation and his inferiority issues. Tiffany Pitcock (Henderson State University) determines if the “birth” order of the Robins affects their characterizations and relationships with Batman and with one another as pseudo- siblings. Halee Smith (Henderson State University) asks if Bruce Banner’s refusal to accept his alter-ego the Hulk as an angry facet of himself is a Freudian defense mechanism or a case of dissociative identity disorder. Samantha Hunter (Henderson State University) investigates if the X-Men’s Jean Grey qualifies for posttraumatic stress disorder, how the repression of her memories affects her ability to cope, how her childhood resulted in her choice to join the X-Men, and how Xavier has helped her mental stability over the years.

The Art of Play: How the ’90s Changed Action Figures from Toys to Collectibles
All through the 1980s action figures were small, shiny, fun but oftentimes crudely sculpted toys. In 1994 Todd McFarlane took a huge risk to his new empire and started his own toy company (Todd Toys) to make figures based on the characters in Image Comics and in so doing turned the action figure market on its ear. A taller format, better sculpting, and a radical change in paint ops reset the industry standard and raised the bar for everyone. The ripple effect lead to changes at Toy Biz and the appearance of new players in the market such as Art Asylum, The Four Horsemen, and Mezco. The alumni from McFarlane went out into the world and changed smaller companies that were just starting in the action figure world such as NECA and Diamond Select Toys. This tectonic shift is still being felt in the industry as companies focus more on art and realism in their lines. Industry leaders, sculptors, and people who were there discuss the changes and what it meant for collectors then and now. Moderator Daniel “Julius Marx” Pickett from ActionFigureInsider.com will be joined by Joe Ferstl (McFarlane Toys), Jesse Falcon (Marvel), Jean St. Jean (Jean St. Jean Studios), Eric “Cornboy” Mayse (The Four Horsemen Design), Digger T. Mesch (Dig Deep Entertainment, Agent 88, Founder of Art Asylum), and maybe a surprise or two.
