In 2012, Ricky Gervais created a series or mini-series or something (even Gervais wasn’t sure) called Derek which featured the creator as the seemingly mentally-handicapped title character. Brits weren’t sure how to react to it, unsure if they should be offended or see the series as a dramedy that Ricky seemed to be putting out there.
Now, stateside, we’ll have a chance to have an opinion as Netflix has picked up the series for US distribution. No premiere date is set but we should be seeing it sometime this year.
Derek follows Gervais’ Derek Noakes as he interacts with a slew of characters working with him at a retirement home. Fans of Ricky’s work will notice Karl Pilkington (An Idiot Abroad) as Derek’s friend Dougie.
Compared to shows like The Office, Life’s Too Short or Extras, the show is a bit lighter and is compared more to (if anything) Extras’ finale which was a bit more emotional than hilarious. That’s not to say the show isn’t without comedy.
The deal to bring the show to the US on Netflix was originally announced back in September.
